Beerfest, Brats and Heineken

The Movie= Broken Lizards' Beerfest

I love this movie. Its a beer guy's dream, a compilation of beer drinkers from around the world. This movie makes up for the Broken Lizard's Club Dread which was no where near as good as Super Troopers.

This is a story of two brothers who take their dead grandfather's (Donald Sutherland) ashes to Oktoberfest in Germany for his final resting place. When they get there they find out that their grandfather was known as the son of a whore who stole the recipe to Germany's greatest beer and they can not place his ashes with the rest of the long gone Beerfest elders. When they find their half uncle and learn that their great-gram gram's was the whore and then they challenge their German cousins to a drinking contest. After losing they return to America determined to win the next years Beerfest.

After they get their team together ( a heavy weight eater and drinker called Landfill, a Jewish scientist called Fink who has to figure out how to win if they have to drink form The Boot, and Barry a male prostitute with the best quarters and beer pong hands ever known). They set out to win the Beerfest for them selves and the USA

The Food= Brats, Red Cabbage and Potato Cakes

I believe this is a great meal for watching this movie. You can not go wrong with Bratwurst. I personally like the beer or hot Bratwurst. One way to prepare them is to boil them for about 10 minutes then put them on a hot grill. The boiling takes lots of the fat out of the brats. I don't do this. I just put them on a hot grill ( charcoal is my favorite for this). Cook them till they have a nice crunch texture to the skin, me I like mine just a little burned.

For the red cabbage you fix it by cutting up a head or two of cabbage ( remember red) but it in a 2 or 4 qt pot. Fill with water , just enough to cover the cabbage. Add salt, pepper (chopper onion if you want) garlic powder . Bring to a boil then turn down to simmer and cook till tender.

For the Potato Cakes you will need 3 eggs, 2 tablespoons of floor 1/4 teaspoon of baking powder,1/2 a teaspoon of salt and pepper, 6 potatoes shredded, 3/4 cup chopper red onion and 1/2 to 3/4 cup of oil. In a large bowl mix all the ingredient's together and heat the oil in a large frying pan. When oil is heated drop a heaping table spoon of the mix in the pan. Flatten then out and cook about 3 or 4 minute per side. Put on a paper towel to drain.

The Beer= Heineken

I know its a beer but it fits great with the movie and meal. I find Heineken to be a good beer to go with rich foods like the ones above. I like the clean taste of the beer , but it is a lager and lots of people do not like Heineken. I love beer and I find that most lagers taste some what different. You just have to find the right mix of hops and barley that you like. Try a few and see .
